Understanding Addiction
Addiction is often misunderstood. Too often, it is seen as a matter of choice or willpower, when in reality it is a complex condition that changes the brain, behaviour, and emotions. It can affect anyone, regardless of background — addiction doesn’t discriminate.
This workshop takes you beyond the myths and stigma, offering an accessible introduction to the psychology and neuroscience of addiction. Participants will gain both knowledge and empathy, while also learning how recovery is possible through resilience, agency, supportive relationships, and hope.
Through a blend of learning and discussion, this workshop gives participants insight into the realities of addiction while highlighting the importance of compassion, awareness, and supportive environments in reducing stigma and supporting recovery.
Key Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
Understand what addiction is and how it affects the brain, behaviour, and emotions.
Be able to explain the cycle of addiction, withdrawal, and why change can feel so difficult.
Recognise the difference between substance addictions (alcohol, nicotine, opioids, etc.) and behavioural addictions (gambling, gaming, shopping).
Be aware of the role of shame, guilt, and stigma, and how language can either block or support recovery.
Understand how addiction impacts families, friends, and wider relationships.
Appreciate recovery as an ongoing process of resilience, agency, and hope.
